It had stormed - stormed!!! - while we were eating, so I was worried my flight would be delayed, but it left Athens on time.

Of course, London had bad weather so we were in the hold for 30 minutes there. It then took an hour to get from the gate, through passport control and to the bus stop for the Hilton shuttle. Grr. I then had to wait 25 minutes for the next shuttle, having just missed one. Double grr. It was 11:30 pm by the time I checked in at the Hilton. Maximum possible sleep was down to 5 hours.

The Hilton room was rather nice, but all I cared about was the bed at that point. I completely zonked out, and 4:45 am came wayyyy too soon.

From the Hilton to the terminal where American is located, T3, you walk through an outdoor walkway, then take the HEX between T4-T3, then have another little walk. This, plus security, took all of 30 minutes. Why hadn't the night before gone so smoothly?!

I made my way to the Admirals Club, extremely happy to be a member as I got online, charged my iPod, and ate breakfast while guzzling coffee. Ahh. I enjoyed the lounge for a half hour or so before heading to the gate. What a civilized way to start the last leg!

The flight home was completely uneventful except for the sad demise of my headphones, which broke as I put them on. I tried wearing my iPhone headphones but my ears got sore, so I ended up holding the left earpiece to my head while watching the movies!!!

We arrived at O'Hare a little early, and amazingly I got through border control, baggage claim and customs in 25 minutes! Getting up early sucked, but being on the only flight coming in has it's benefits. Just over an hour after landing, I was home with a very happy cat.

This was such a wonderful trip. I can't imagine doing this kind of vacation frequently, but it truly had everything: relaxation, gorgeous views, culture, activity, beaches, food! I'm so happy I was able to do this vacation and will have fantastic memories.

Until the next trip...

Polkagrl

Red Beach

Having done the black sand beach, we wanted to see the red beach. The bus to Akrotiri, the town near the beach, was only hourly. So we aimed for the 10:30 am bus and got there just in time - or so we thought. The bus was "full." I use quotes because while there were people up to the doors, there was also a ton of space and people refusing to move in further. We urbanites could see there was a ton of room. Alas, the driver refused to do anything about it and the bus left without us.
After a coffee break, we returned to the bus terminal in plenty of time for the next bus and made it on no problem. On arriving at the Akrotiri beach terminal, a bunch of us started walking in the direction indicated by the sign. There was a little pier with a sign for the red, white & black beaches, but the owner of the nearest taverna said the boat was not running (we later found out it was too windy). So we all started walking together, laughing because none of us knew where we were going!

We did manage to get to the right place - a stunning overlook of the beach and the trail down. Charlotte commented that we thought we'd be going without our hilly hike that day...! By the time we got to the small stretch of beach, we were hot, sweaty, and ready for a swim. We set out our belongings and checked out the water. It was very rocky, with large rocks near the shore in some places, and a lot of waves. Standing in the water, our calves were pelted with pebbles when the waves came in. We went back and put on our shoes, then got in - ahhh.

Although we hadn't been sure we'd spend the entire day at the beach, we ended up doing just that. There weren't too many people as it was a little difficult to get to. The people watching was great, though, and the sound of the waves was relaxing.

We finally decided we were hungry around 4 pm and hiked back toward the terminal. We ate at a fish taverna that my cousin had let me know about - it had been in Bon Appetit! The decor was very cute and the food.... we agreed that it may have been the best of the trip. I indulged in an order of mussels -have to get some seafood at a fish taverna - and they were delicious.

We finished our meal just in time for the next bus, which was lucky as there was a 2 hour wait after that!

On the way from he beach to the taverna, there had been a stand with traditional Santorini products, so we bought a bottle of wine. Back in the room, we stuck the wine in the freezer while we rinsed off from the beach, then went out on the balcony to enjoy our wine and the evening view. A couple of hours passed very pleasantly before we decided to go into Fira and have a look around.

Neither of us were hungry as we'd eaten lunch so late, so we ended up poking around in all of the shops that were open. The evening was capped off with a drink - champagne for Charlotte, vinsanto for me. Then back to the room to rest up for our last day in Santorini and the flight back to Athens.

Caldera Cruise and Other Adventures!

Very ambitious today – we got up “early” (in Greek time) and were having breakfast by 9 am. Shortly after, we set off for the cable cars and were soon being hustled into the car. It turned out there were 4 cruise ships calling at the Old Port, so they were running the cars constantly instead of the usual every 20 minutes – fantastic!

We had a little wait during which we checked out the Old Port – nothing fancy. We boarded a boat that looked like a sailing boat but was not! Then sailed over to Nea Kameni, the island that is the active volcano. We had a strenuous hike up black sand paths to the active crater, where our guide gave us the history of the island. We stopped just before the talk to check out a hole that was 96 degrees Celsius (!) and gave off steam and a sulfur odor. As we listened to our guide, I could feel the soles of my feet warming from the ground. It was pretty wild.

After hiking back down, we boated over to the next island, Palea Kameni. The boat anchored off the shore and Charlotte and I, along with about 10 others, jumped into the water and swam to the hot spring. The water at first was chilly, then as you got closer to the spring warmed up a bit, also turning a rusty brown. They had warned us our suits could become discolored! We splashed around in the warm spring water for a while, looking at the goats up on the rocks, then swam back to the boat. Changing out of wet suits in public was tricky, but Charlotte taught me the Scandinavian art of changing and we managed!

Next stop: Therasia and its port of Korfo. We almost all at lunch at the place the guide recommended, Captain John’s. Charlotte and I devoured the pork and chicken souvlaki! Mmm it was good. After eating we poked around the port a bit – not too much to see, but there was a local fishing and looking very picturesque!

Back on the boat and heading for Oia. It was so pretty as we approached, poised on top of the cliff and dripping down. I thought the boat might tip as everyone scooted to the side with the view! Even the port was cute.

After Oia, we docked at the Fira Old Port and the tour was over. We had 3 optionsto get back up to town: cable car, walk (600 steps? Um, no), or donkey. We decided on donkey. For some reason, they decided not to lead us – or to give us any instructions. Just up and then the donkey goes! We were laughing the entire way because they each had their own opinion about the best way to go – mine pretty much went straight up, while Charlotte’s was zigzagging the whole way. And do not get in the donkey’s way as they do not yield!!! It was a hilariously fun experience.

You might think this was quite a day and that we were done, but no. After an internet interlude, we barely caught a bus to Oia and got there 40 minutes before sunset. But, doh! We forgot a map. So we frantically wandered, looking for the Venetian fort. We finally found it and it was, of course, packed, but the view was fantastic. It was so hazy that the sunset itself was not all that gorgeous, but the light on the town was beautiful.

We wandered Oia a bit – at a more relaxed pace now! – until we were hungry. We ate at the Blue Sky Taverna, which did offer a view of the beautiful blue sky until it became too dark. The food was quite good – we had spicy cheese dip, eggplant Santorini style, and Greek salad.

The word “wander” seems to go with Oia, at least when one has forgotten a map. We wandered quite a bit after dinner trying to find the bus stop/taxi stand. After the day we’d had, it was taking a toll on my knee and I was relieved when we found the taxi. A quick ride – and I mean quick, the guy drove like a NASCAR driver! – and we were back in Fira, and ready to go to bed.

To the Black Sand Beach and Ancient Thera

Having failed to find a travel agency to buy boat tour tickets on Tuesday night, we decided Wednesday would be a trip to see Ancient Thera and the black sand beach at Kamari. Finding the bus station and the bus to Kamari turned out to be pretty easy, and we were in Kamari before 11 am.

Finding the mini bus to Ancient Thera was a little more challenging. We were looking for a public mini bus and stop, which turned out to be wrong – when we went in to a travel agent to ask about it, she told us it’s a transfer we have to arrange and we had about 3 minutes before the next one! So she kindly called them and told them to wait for us and we booked our 10€ mini bus.

That mini bus was worth every penny. I would have taken pictures of the view but I was trying to control my stomach’s flip flops as we went up a steep, narrow road with tight hairpin turns, sometimes requiring the driver to back up to a wide spot so traffic from the other direction could pass. It was a good 15-20 minute ride, but felt longer! And there was no way we would have wanted to walk up!

Especially since it became immediately apparent that touring the Ancient Thera site meant walking up the mountain. It was p

retty cool to see the ruins and how the town was laid out; residents definitely had a gorgeous view! Although trekking down to the water to fish must not have been fun.

The minibus allows you 1.5 hours at the site which turned out to be a perfect amount of time. Between climbing up, the lack of shade, and the relentless sun, more time wasn’t needed. The drive down wasn’t as bad – mostly because I closed my eyes!

After seeing the sparkling water from the top of the mountain, we were anxious to get in, so we headed to the beach and got our chairs, and then headed into the water. The bottom was pebbly and dropped quickly. The water felt cold at first, but was really refreshing after being so hot.

We air dried then ate at the taverna just above the chairs. Our waiter was a huuuuge flirt, asking “Is there anything else I can do for you?” with a suggestive smile after taking our orders. Ha! The food was good, especially the stuffed zucchini.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach then walked around the town a bit before catching the bus back to Fira. Kamari looked like a cute, resort-like area to stay in, but we were quite happy we chose to stay in Fira.

We had passed a couple of travel agents in the morning when walking to the bus and went to one now to book the volcano tour. The first place was very nice, but upon getting my credit card pretended it did not work. I told him it did, it’s an American card he has to swipe, try again. He “tried” again, but I didn’t see him swipe it; we said goodbye and I fumed as we went to the next place. Greece is such a cash based country but you’d think on Santorini, they’d be a little more accommodating of tourists and their plastic.

Luckily, the next place – recommended by Katerina, our hostess – was no problem and we were set.

We were lured in to a bakery we were passing and after eyeing the pies for several minutes, decided dinner would be pies and the wine we’d bought in Kamari. On getting back to the room we stuck the wine in the freezer while we showered and changed, then had a feast of cheese pie in whole wheat, potato pie, and dessert of chocolate banana croissant. Yum!

We thought we would have a nightcap in town, but found that most places were empty or closing at midnight (only 30 minutes away, and very early for Greece!). So instead, Charlotte ended up buying a pair of shoes. J

Tomorrow we get up early and take the boat around the Caldera Sea – I’m looking forward to it!

Off to Santorini!

I'm skipping a day in the blog as we basically chilled at the beach on Mykonos for the day yesterday. It was a gorgeous cove, and one of the "expensive" beaches. The water was cold! But it was a lovely, relaxing day.

Today we checked out of our hotel and wandered Mykonos for a few hours before our ferry. The ferry ride was nice, if longer than I thought it would be; both Charlotte and I took a nap. We stopped at Paros and Ios before arriving at Santorini.

As we neared Santorini, cameras came out and everyone craned their necks to look out the window. It truly was a gorgeous sight. On one side the island with villages melting from the top down onto the cliff; on the other, a black lava island.

Our hotel met us at the port, which was nice, especially as it's a bit of a ride into Fira. The hotel was a bit of a shock - a tiny room! - especially after the one in Mykonos. And my suitcase handle had been busted on the ferry, which had made me cranky. We sulked a bit before heading to the main hotel building to see if they had a map.

Our hosts were so kind that we soon felt less pain over our room. They gave us wine, went over the attractions, and made us feel at home. We spent an hour with them before heading off to dinner.

We ate at a restaurant on the caldera side, recommended by our hosts (their son works there). It was very good food and a gorgeous view.

Now we're exhausted and ready for bed... thinking it will be the beach tomorrow.

Delos

On Sunday, I got myself up early and bought a ticket to Delos. Everyone clambered onto the benches on the top of the boat to soak up the sun. As I waited for the boat to leave, I realized that although I'd applied sunscreen, I forgot to bring any with me. Damn.

After a pleasant 30 minute ride we arrived at Delos. The island looked huge! I wanted to avoid getting on the last boat back, so I had about 3 hours to see the sights. And the sights were amazing. Thinking of how the island must have looked in its glory, with the huge populace, was just mind-boggling.

It was also mind-boggling how it was so sunny and hot there!!! The sun just beat down on us. I got to the museum at the midway point and was grateful to be out of the sun for a while. The exhibits were amazing, especially a mosaic floor that was just gorgeous; it's hard to tell from the picture but the tiles are tiny, the size of a pencil eraser or smaller.

I set off again to wander the ruins. Houses, temples, stores... all amazing to imagine. I met a woman from California in one of the temple ruins and she had an excellent guidebook, so for a while we were at the same pace and she would tell me about each ruin.

At this point I was so hot that I was standing up against walls and pressing myself into corners of ruins to get into shade. If I found a big patch I would sit for 5-10 minutes and admire whatever view was provided. At 1:10 or so I gave in and made my way to the boat, bought a beer and a water and guzzled down what was the best, coldest beer I'd ever had - it was so refreshing!!! As I waited for the boat to leave I had to laugh - everyone was now crowding inside, having had more than enough sun!!!

When we got back to Mykonos, Charlotte was waiting at the dock and we wandered the town again - she'd gotten red on the sunbeds the day before and I had had enough sun for the day!!! We came across a restaurant that we liked the looks of for dinner. After buying wine and after-sun lotion, we headed back to the room for sunset drinks then went back to the restaurant, where we had a fantastic meal of modern Greek cuisine.

After dinner it was time for bed - we needed to be ready for the beach the next day!

Naxos to Mykonos

A little behind on my posting, oops!

Although I didn't have time on Saturday morning to get to one of the more beautiful beaches, I thought I'd at least get in some sunning time at the local beach. So I headed down bright and early and was delighted to discover the beds are no charge at that hour, as the money collectors are not there yet. I had one woman try to sell me a massage and I passed, knowing I needed to conserve funds for Mykonos. But when a guy came by offering foot massages, I couldn't resist - my legs and feet were painfully sore from all of the walking in the hilly terrain. It felt soooo good!

Back to the hotel to shower and pack. Stavros, the owner, came to pick me up and at the port told me I could leave my bag at his friend's restaurant. That's what I loved

about Naxos - so casual and friendly and safe. I dropped my bag and grabbed lunch down the waterfront. A very large gentleman sat down a couple tables away and one of the (many) stray cats soon decided he was a prime target. It cracked me up to see this little cat waiting so hopefully for the large man to drop something!

The ferry ride to Mykonos was quick and I slept most of the way. After calling the hotel to get directions, I arrived to find Charlotte a nice pink from lying on the sunbeds. We set off to wander the town and got lost, repeatedly, in the maze of streets that seem to go in physically impossible loops. We each managed to buy a little something for ourselves while wandering.

Back to the hotel to change for dinner. We ate at a place we'd passed that looked nice, and had a delicious meal- not traditional Greek food but with a little update/twist. Yum. We walked around after dinner, looking for a champagne bar we'd seen earlier; it was quite a while before we found it, looping back on ourselves and discovering streets we'd missed earlier! Eventually we did, and had to laugh - all we'd noticed earlier was the champagne bar, not the name: "Queens." (!!!) We sat down, opened the menu and stopped laughing - 20 Euro for most drinks - yikes! We ordered the cheapest drink, prosecco, and nursed it for quite some time before calling it a night.

A Whole Day on Naxos!

Today was my only full day on Naxos. On the advice of some of the locals, and becuase I wanted to go to the Citron distillery, I headed up to the villages.

The roads are windy and through mountains, so the 17 km bus ride took 45 minutes. For some reason I had decided to go to Filoti, and when I got there I wondered why. It was cute but tiny and nothing apparent to do except eat. And it was too early for lunch by Greek standards. So I got a coffee and nursed it for a while, deciding how to get to Halki, where the distillery is. I decided to walk the 3 km as it was downhill.

The walk was really beautiful. It was sunny and warm, but there was a nice breeze that kept it cool. Nobody driving by thought it was crazy to see someone walking on the road, in fact I saw some other walkers.

It was fine until I came across and was distracted by a walking trail that also led to Halki. I started down it and was fine at first, but missed a turn and started thinking hmm, this is not right. After a few minutes of thinking that I went back to the road. I found the trail again in Halki; it would have been a nice walk if I'd known better where I was going.

Halki was a very cute little village. The distillery tou

r was brief but informative, and at the end I tasted the 3 variations of Citron - all yummy. So I broke my vow and bought more alcohol to bring home! I saw a cute grillhouse in a square, but the only empty tables were smack in the sun, so I shopped a bit while stalking the shady tables.

Finally one opened up and I plopped down at it. I got tzatziki and pork souvlaki

which is a LOT of food for one person. I did my best but couldn't finish. When I called for the bill, the guy asked me if I didn't like the food; I told him it was delicious but too much for me! He waved the souvlaki skewer and said women shouldn't look like that - I had to laugh. He sat down and we talked about Naxos, Crete and world politics for a while - it was an interesting conversation. The people here are so friendly.

I then went to wait for the bus, and the lone woman on the bench asked if I was American. She was, too, and we started chatting. She had been in Greece for a couple weeks, doing basically the reverse of my trip, and is turning 62 on Sunday. Soon a woman from one of the shops came along and sat with us. She lives in Naxos Chora but is from the UK. We all had a fun chat until the bus came, including a restaurant recommendation I don't have time to follow through on. Boo!

After the bus ride, I puttered around a bit, had a coffee on the waterfront, then walked around before going to the Venetian Museum for the concert (as I walked by last night's restaurant, my friend from last night waved hello - how fun!). The concert was great - fantastic bouzeki music. The one letdown was that there were only 4 dances; I'd thought there'd be more. But it was a great space, a great view, and an overall wonderful evening.

Now to bed... trying to hit the beach before leaving tomorrow.

First Evening in Naxos

Feeling pretty good right now, for a couple of reasons.

1) My watch is fixed, yay! I am unreasonably happy at having a functioning timepiece on my arm again. I may have an issue here but we'll explore the 12-step program later. One of the shops on the waterfront was able to locate and install a battery in my watch, and now I am happy.

2) I loooooooooove a good meal. Based on several recommendations, I went to To Kastro for dinner. Dinner

for one in Greece is difficult - I want to order about twice as much as I can eat. I restrained myself to a Naxos salad (cheese, tomato, caper, onion & olives) and a mackerel entree. (and yes it was the whole fish!!!) I still shamed myself to the point that the proprietor? manager? offered to debone my fish!!! He did and brought the remains back despite my protests that I was full. It was delicious but I could not eat any more. So he helpfully sent over a digestif! :-) I think it had a flavor of mastic, but I'm not sure. He came over and chatted for a while which was fun, then sent over a 2nd glass of digestif... yeah I'm sleeping well tonight!

So, plan for tomorrow: villages. Maybe beach before if I get up. I haven't had a good night's sleep since Sunday night, so we'll see.

To Greece and Then to Naxos!

Here I am in my first full day in Greece. It's hard to believe I'm here!

The trip to Greece went fairly well. The flight from Chicago had quite a bit of turbulence at first, so dinner came a bit late.... which meant little time for sleeping, unfortunately. After arriving at Heathrow Airport I went through security back in to Terminal 3 to use the Admirals Club where I had a nice breakfast of pumpkin muffins and coffee. Then I had to take the bus to Terminal 5, go through security, and wait for the gate for my flight to open. On the advice of the lounge attendant I allowed 2 hours to change terminals, which was only a little too much time (!).

I met Charlotte at the square in Glyffada and we went to her place to drop[ off my bags. We then went to a Cretan restaurant, which was pretty good overall, but the tzatziki was a little bland.

Back home to pack the additional items from Charlotte (towel, tanning lotion & tix!) then hit the hay for my 5:30 am alarm. Sometime in the middle of the night a car, maybe 2 cars, was screeching around the street outside Charlotte's. It was so loud it woke me up and it took a while to get back to sleep. Argh.

Very easy getting to the ferry this morning, the taxi took me directly to the correct gate. It was a nice ride. I had a family next to me until the first stop at Paros, they had 2 small children who were adorable and very enetrtaining when I got bored!

The hotel owner met me at the dock in Naxos and drove me to the hotel. He is very nice, and gave me some tips on sights, hikes etc. The room is actually like a little apartment, with kitchenette - very convenient! After walking all over I stocked up some yogurt and coffee for the next 2 days.

The old town is a MAZE ing. Ha, I'm so punny. I would love to know how far I walked, becuase all of the streets are narrow and winding and make no sense. I ended up in the same place several times without knowing how I got there! I hope I can find the Venetian Museum again tomorrow night - I got a ticket to the Bouzouki Evening which has wine, music and dancing; it promises to be a very cool experience.

So, I'm taking a short break now and catching up on email, blogging and possibly a nap. The shops are closed now and it's wayyyy to early to eat, so I may as well have a break! I'm also looking at tomorrow's possibilities... maybe heading to a village... stay tuned!

And I'm Off...

Just barely made it to the Blue Line before the rain started - a couple of drops hit me and I groaned while stepping up the pace for the last 10 yards. Whew! As I rode the El to O'Hare, I could see it really coming down. By the time we started to go underground at the airport, though, it stopped.

I was selected for additional random screening at security. Hmm. Apparently TSA wanted to hold my hands. As they were 1) still attached to my body and 2) free of any naughty residue,* I was free to go in a jiffy.

Now sitting in the Admirals Club. I'm mourning the death of my watch battery and wondering how to get a new one. Maybe I can get one in Heathrow... not seeing anything that might be helpful here at O'Hare.

So - 10 hours until I'm in Heathrow, 17 until I'm in Greece. Launder... Pack

I'm heading back to Greece at the end of the month, this time for a bit of island-hopping: Naxos, Mykonos and Santorini. I'm taking two weeks for this trip, which is freaking me out a little as I have never taken such a long vacation as an adult! And it's going to be rough being away from my cat for that long; now that she's a senior cat, I worry about her a lot.

It's also a challenge as I just got home at midnight from a 5-day business trip. Which means I have 5.5 days in the office before I leave, and just over a week to unpack from that trip, launder everything (including the sheets the cat puked on this morning, sigh) and repack. Hopefully I do a better job packing than I did for the past trip, for which I forgot several key items including half of a suit! But since the packing list for vacation reads: swimsuits, flip flops, dresses - it should be easier. I just have to resist packing all of my cute shoes!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://polkagrlgreece.blogspot.com/2011/05/unpack-launder-pack.html' title='Unpack... Treat....

I got on the flight from Athens to JFK this morning (or, in US time, yesterday). There were a couple and a guy also waiting to get on; I heard them talking, and they had all tried to get on the flight the previous day. Fortunately, we all got on; I was super lucky and got a business seat which made the flight go by very pleasantly. Going back to economy transatlantic is going to be a bummer!

Immigration and customs at JFK was relatively quick and painless. It was only when I hit security for the domestic leg that things slowed down. There were only three lines for the whole terminal, and it took a good 25 minutes to get through. Which in the end was fine, as the flight I'm aiming for next has been delayed. So I'm sucking the life out of the Boingo connection I paid for by surfing the web! All in all, it's been more treat than trick so far. Fingers crossed!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://polkagrlgreece.blogspot.com/2010/10/trick-treat.html' title='Trick... Since I'm standby, my cousin has been checking seat availability for me and when we got back to Athens last night and checked email, it appeared that today is my best chance to get to the US until possibly Wednesday. As much as I'd like to spend 3 more days in Greece, I have a work commitment on Wednesday so felt it best to try to get home today. I'm kind of proud of myself for going with the flow as well as I have! and it's part of the adventure.

It was a great week in Greece. For such a short time, I feel like I did and saw a lot. And ate a LOT of cheese pies. :-) It was great hanging out with Charlotte, too; since I just saw her in July, it's not much longer between visits than it would have been if she were still in the U.S. I know I'll be back for another visit, but I think there will be a longer gap this time, which will be weird. I know it won't matter to our friendship though, and besides - we'll be gossiping and staying in touch through email and texting until then.

So... we'll see where I post from next!

Driving to Heaven

What a full day Friday was! The wind was really blowing, and the bay was very choppy. As we walked around the waterfront to the car, a wave crashed up onto the walk and drenched our shoes and pants! The whole walkway was wet, and now we knew why.

We hit the road around 11 am, and after some searching, found the German War Ce

metery just west of Hania. Over 4,400 soldiers from WWII are buried there.

There's an equally large cemetery in the other direction that is the last resting place for Australians, British and Greeks who gave their lives. The German cemetery bears a message of peace that one cannot help but take to heart, thinking of the terrible losses.

We drove on to a monastery, which we somehow passed by, and over a curvy, narrow road up a peninsula. When we reached the town at the end, we got out to stretch our legs and relax our muscles, which had been tensed up during the ride! We decided to take the road back that went down the middle of the peninsula, and it was less nerve-wracking.

The drive took us down the gorgeous we st coast of Crete. We could see beuatiful blue water, and, as we drove, a kri kri (native goat) in the road. Then a dog, tied to a donkey, tied to the side - we took this as a sign to stop in the small town for lunch. The first taverna we approached was closed, and a man sitting out front gestured to us; I wasn't sure what it meant. We walked to another tavernawhich also appeared closed. As we started back to the car, a little old man came hustling up - he owned the taverna and would open it. He asked if we spoke German, and although we said no, his German was better than his English - and our Greek! - so we ended up using German.

He offered fish or "cutlet" (pork), salad, bread and wine that he had made. Sounded good to us! So he made our meal, right then and there! It was funny to be the only ones in the taverna except for the owner and his wife, especially when we had our meal and they sat there watching us eat! It was so good though - everything was incredibly fresh. We were very lpeased with our lunch, and with a unique experience.

From then on, the roads got crazier. Twisty, turny, high on the mountainside, somtimes with a guardrail, sometimes not. The scenery, when I looked, was stunning; it also made my stomach flip to see how high we were. At one point, the road climbed and the rail was so low that it looked like we were driving into the clouds.

The road finally began to descend, and before long, we were at Elafonisi beach. Gorgeous. There is no other word. Some of the sand was pink, and there were volcanic rocks poking out of the deep blue water. The mountains rose behind us. We walked the beach, wading in the water, taking in the beauty.

Too soon, it was time to go back if we wanted light on the mountain drive. We chose to go up through the middle of the mountains, and it turned out to be a less stomach-turning route. The villages were a little bigger on this road, too.

Dinner in Hania was back to Tamam. It was too cool to sit outside, so we sat in the dining room that was once a Turkish bath. Originally we were giong to order all different food, but we ended up getting the tzatziki again, and a variety of croquettes. Everything was delicious once again.

After dinner we wandered the town looking for a place for a nightcap. In trying to find a place we saw early in our wandering, we stumbled across a bar - a proper bar, which is rare in Greece - and it had an amazing selection of beers! Charlotte ordered a Hoegaarden and I haad a Saint Landelin Blonde. A nice way to wind down a busy day.

Today, we're sticking to Hania, checking out the sites, a museum or two, and the shopping. Then back to Athens, where I'll be for.... I don't know how many days! The flights are pretty booked so it looks like I'll be there a little longer than planned. Stay tuned!

Rethymnon

The plans for yesterday were altered due to Charlotte not feeling well. I spent the morning walking around Hania, catching part of the parade for Oxi Day and checking out the location of the market and some little shops that we can go to on Saturday.

In the afternoon, we drove to Rethymnon, which is another charming little city. There is a large Venetian fortress (fortezza) above the town, which both is and provides marvelous views. We toured the fortress then walked around the old town, which is, like Hania, full of narrow lanes and beautiful Venetian architecture. We managed to locate all of the major sights: the mosque, the loggia, and the fountain (the latter quite by accident!).

Lunch had been at an unremarkable taverna in Rethymnon: mussels, greens, and tzatziki. It was okay, but fell far short of the food we'd had so far. So I hoped to make up for it at dinner and decided we'd go to Well of the Turk.

We spent a good 30 minutes - at least! - looking for the darned place. First in one area, then another. I'd looked it up on the internet, marked it on my map, and was getting ridiculously frustrated by our inability to find it. A guy offered to help us, so we asked if he knew it, and he told us to go in a completely different direction! But we did find it!!! And it was well worth the search - located in an historic building, cozy and charming, and fantastic food. We ordered "chicken cigars" which were chicken and spices wraped in phyllo; a trio of hummus, tzatziki and bhabaghanouj; and meatballs. Yum.

On the way home, we met two little kittens who were VERY friendly! They followed us for a block or so, worrying us that they might follow us all the way home. But they stopped and turned back. We also bumped into a couple dogs we know, which is quite funny that we are getting to recognize the animals of Hania.

Today, the plan is to drive to Elafonisi beach and see a few sights on the way. It's very windy and a bit chilly, so probably no swimming, but we look forward to seeing some new places.

Evacuated! The weather was rainy off and on, and quite windy. It's not far in kilometers, but it took 2 hours to get to Iraklion; the National Road is not like an Interstate at home. We thought we'd eat in Iraklion and then go to Knossos, but after 45 minutes of futilely driving around, we gave up. Iraklion has no street signs in the Latin alphabet and we could not decipher enough names to get where we wanted to go. So, I literally jumped out of the car as we were stopped in traffic and ran to a bakery for cheese pies while Charlotte parked.

Knossos was HUGE. It was truly amazing to envision what it once was. It was sad, to me, that the original archeologist, Evans, had reconstructed parts. Oh well.

We drove back, and as the weather had gotten a little worse, it took a bit longer. We decided to go straight to Hania and walk around before dinner. There are a lot of nice little stores here, and we peeked in to them as we walked around the Old Town.

For dinner, we went to Semiramis, which I had scoped out the previous night. We sat under an outside tent in a cute courtyard, but it was raining so hard - thunderstorms,

actually - that the rain was coming in, more and more. All of the diners laughed it off, until we were all getting pretty damp and the restaurant led us, under umbrellas, to their indoor seating in a little cave-looking room. They brought our food, covered and on trays, and a refreshed carafe of wine. Everyone in the little cave was giggling about the experience; it was quite a bonding moment! The food there was delicious - so delicious I forgot to take any pictures! We had leek pie, cheese croquettes that were AMAZING, Cretan salad, and meatballs. And of course raki with a little sweets for dessert.

Afterwards, we found a cute jazz club and had one last glass of wine before heading to bed. If today is supposed to be as sunny as it is now, we'll head to a beach on the south coast.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://polkagrlgreece.blogspot.com/2010/10/evacuated-from-restaurant.html' title='Evacuated! Got the last pair of sandals and went to the Folk Museum, which was really nice - I love seeing traditional dress, and they had tons of mannequins in dress from all over the country. Will post a picture later.

The flight to Hania was quick and we actually managed to find our way from the airport to the hotel - even though at first I was looking at the map of Iraklion, ha! It's the old Venetian port and the "roads" are narrow walkways with gorgeous buildings on each side.

Several people and guidebooks had recommended Tamam restaurant, and since we walked right by it on the way

to the hotel, we decided to eat dinner there. We ordered tzatziki, fried potatoes with warm cheese, the house salad, zuchini croquettes, and boureki (cheese pastry). No, we did NOT finish it all, but we gave it a good try!!! The server brought us a complimentary dessert which I loved, some kind of lemony halva-type creation. Also, he brought us raki, which - WOO - may be an acquired taste.

Today we are off to Iraklion to see the city and the palace of Knossos. More later!

Athens

The first order of the day today was to get my phone set up. That took quite a while, and it was 11 am by the time I got headed to Athens. Of course that meant that by the time I walked from the tram stop to Monistiraki, it was lunchtime! Luckily my kebab stall is still there and was open. I panicked at first when I didn't see lamb on the menu, but when I asked the guy he assured me he had lamb -whew! Delicious lamb pita, loaded with tzatziki, tomatoes, onion, lettuce and french fries. Yum. Sorry, no picture - I felt too conspicuous as the only customer sitting there! (most people get takeaway)

Once my hunger was sated, it was time for the poet sandal maker shop. I spent an hour there along with a couple from China, as the sandal maker customized the fit of our sandals. This was much different from when I had gone in July 2009; it was much busier then, and the sandals were sold as is off the shelf. I really enjoyed getting custom-fitted shoes! I also got one of the two pairs I'm bringing back for others; I have to go back tomorrow and get the final pair.

Afterwards, I wandered Plaka for a while. I found the folk art museum but it is closed on Mondays. I didn't find anything worth buying though. I meandered up a boulevard I walked a lot last year, going past the market. Some of the stalls were still open, so I got some oregano and lavender.

I swung around and headed back to Syntagma Square, and along the way found a little cafe back in a courtyard. So I stopped and had an espresso and rested my feet for a while. I really wanted a pastry, too, but they had no Greek pastries so I skipped the treat.

Charlotte and I consulted via text and since I had accumulated a lot of bags, we agreed to meet in Glyfada and have dinner there. I suggested the taverna we ate at last year, which had tasty food. Unfortunately, when I got there it was closed - stupid Monday!!! So we ended up at a creperie that was pretty good. I'll get my Greek food in the rest of the week. :-)

So tomorrow, back to Athens, maybe a stop in Piraeus, and then we're off to Hania, Crete tomorrow evening!

Arrival in Greece!

Got at JFK after being up nearly 6 hours already. I had planned to bop to another terminal to get a pedicure and use the Admirals Club, but apparently you have to go landside to do that and I wasn't about to go through security two more times. So I treated myself to a day pass and I do have a teeny bit of lounge envy, it's quite nice in here!

So the day started with my lovely neighbors making sure I got up on time by having a screaming fight on their back porch. At 3 am. I felt bad for everyone they were waking up who DIDN'T have to be up! A couple of us were out on the stairwell listening in - such drama.

Much less drama since then, thank goodness. Taxi arrived on time (decided against taking the El as it takes 3x as long!), got on the first flight, managed a nap. Now just chilling and playing on the internet until the next flight - to ATHENS! Can't wait to get there and see Charlotte and her new digs.

Back to Greece!

I'm heading back to Greece in just over 3 days. I didn't expect to go back, but Charlotte is working and living there for two years, and I suspect this will be the first of at least a couple trips while she's there!

So the plan is for me to leave Chicago on Saturday and arrive in Athens Sunday morning. I say the "plan," because my cousins have graciously allowed me to use a "buddy pass" which is a super cool and adventurous way to travel - all on standby! So my fingers are crossed that I will get on the flights I'm aiming for. It'll be interesting to fly on an airline that is not my usual AAirline. :-)

Once in Greece, I'll have a couple days to refamiliarize myself with Athens. I hope to get one of my favorite lamb pitas that I got addicted to last time, yum! and fill a few orders at the sandal shop. Then we're off to Crete, where we'll stay in Chania/Hania and explore with our rental car. I've read great things about the food of Crete and plan to come back a few pounds heavier!

Tonight is my last night of lazing about at home - tomorrow the packing begins and I hope to have it finished Thursday. I have wild dreams of going to bed early on Friday to get some sleep before heading to the airport at an early (expletive deleted for parent's eyes) hour - if I manage that, I'll truly be impressed with myself.

I'm hoping to post at least a little while in Greece, so feel free to follow along. With luck, there will be food porn to drool over. :-)

Sweet Home, Chicago!!!

Managed to get to the train station with only one small detour (aka being momentarily lost!). I grabbed a coffee and pain au chocolat in the train station, and it was so good I repeated my breakfast at the airport! (I'm sure there are no calories in pain au chocolat when in Brussels!) Checkin was easy, although required a lot of explaining of transiting overnight.

Jet Air was a very nice airline - comfy seats in economy, the kind that slid forward when you leaned back. There were seatback screens for the inflight entertainment, and I managed to pass the 8 hours fairly easily. The Indian food was yummy. I'd fly them again, except....

... connecting to the U.S. in Toronto is a nightmare. You claim your bag, go through Canadian immigration, then preclear U.S. immigration and customs. The process took 1:30 of my 2 hour layover, and everyone in the line for the U.S. preclearance were freaking out at how close they were cutting it. One group was still in line with 20 minutes before departure; people were nice enough to let them cut in ahead. There was another guy on the Chicago flight right in front of me, and a family behind me, so I wasn't too worried. But by the time I cleared, I stuck my bag on the conveyor, walked to the gate, and boarded.

As I sat waiting for the doors to close - a lot of passengers came on behind me yet - I saw my flourescent yellow FlyerTalk tag putt up the conveyor belt into the hold of the plane, and sighed with relief. Oops.

When I got to Chicago, I waited for the Toronto bags to come out... they finally came out... everyone left... crap. No bag. No record of the bag after I claimed it in Toronto; American apparently doesn't scan them as they load them. I am not very hopeful about seeing it again, since I did see it go on the plane. And it's a new bag, only 3 months old. Luckily, I did stick my new purse and sandals in my carryon...

So I made the trip from O'Hare with less luggage than when I left, which felt very odd. And when I got home, Dozy came running and meowing and hasn't left my side since. That's the thing about travel: it's great, but coming home is sometimes even better.

Bye Bye, Greece!

Friday was my last day in Greece. I had made a plan for the day, but of course am now on Greek time and ended up adjusting it!

I walked down with Charlotte and printed my boarding pass, then said goodbye. Off to the Piraeus market, where I purchased a gift for a relative (oooo, is it you?!) and some Greek oregano. Back to the hotel, where I did last minute packing and some internet surfing.

For some unknown reason, I decided to walk to the Metro. With my bags. In the heat. By the time I got down there, I was dripping wet!!! Ew. At least everyone stayed far away from me, heh heh! The walk took a little longer, so I got to Athens later than planned. I decided to eat near Syntgama so I could get to the airport bus easily.

The restaurants on the square were, sadly, crap. So I walked a couple blocks off and picked a place randomly. As I looked at the menu, the name rang a bell so I checked my guide and yes, it was recommended! Very cute, little tables on the sidewalk with drawers containing the flatware. I ordered the "small kebabs" appetizer, and they were delicious. An excellent last meal in Greece!

The bus only took an hour to get to the airport, despite my fears of heavy traffic, so I was really early. Luckily there was free WiFi so I played on the computer until the flight boarded. Brussels airlines was quite good - it helped of course that I was in b.flex, which is like premium economy/business. The meal was tasty, as was the wine, and the seats were pretty roomy.

Arrival in Brussels: yay! I easily found the train, and once on, got unexpectedly emotional. I think it was a combination of being tired, being on my way home, and the memories of the last time I was there.

The hotel, unfortuately, was not as easy to find. As it was midnight by the time I checked in, I gave up my dreams of frites and beer and set the alarm on the phone for 6 am... ready for the last 2 legs home.

Museum Day

On Thursday, I got going a bit earlier and walked down with Charlotte, she giong to her office and me headed for the Metro. I got a wee bit distracted by the stores near the Metro and bought a couple things - some coffee, and a duffel that I knew I would need after all of my shopping. So, I ended up hauling those around all day!

When I got into Athens, I decided to look for a couple of shops that were in the guidebook. I ended up not buying anything, and headed to the Byzantine & Christianity Museum; I don't know why I decided to go there, but it ended up being a ood choic. How did I forget all of the ancient history I learned in school??? This museum was a great refresher course, and had

a lot of beautiful icons in its collection. I also learned about the exodus of Greeks from Turkey & vice versa after WWI, which I had not known about.

After all that learning I was hungry. And I wanted my lamb kebab pita! I think I'm addicted... So I headed to Monastariki and went to my little stand. Yum yum yum. That pita is so good that both times, I've chowed it down before thinking Oh, I should have taken a picture!

Needing to work off my lunch, I walked up to the National Archeological Museum. That place was very confusing in layout, and has a very very large collection. After 2 hours, I began to tire of looking at things! The statues and designs on the vases amazed me, though. And the jewelry - wow. I wanted it!

Charlotte and I had bene texting back and forth about the evening's plans, and I wasn't done at the museum in time to meet her for drinks. I eventually made my way back to Piraeus, stopping at a grocery store for ouzo & honey to take home and a beer to drink while I relaxed before dinner.

When I went down to get a taxi to the suburb for dinner, I had a heck of a time. The first taxi declined to take me to Glyfada. Then no taxis showed up. Then a car pulled over - and the guy started hitting on me! LOL! He was very good looking, but I turned down his offer to drive me to Glyfada and took his phone number instead. (In the end, I didn't call.)

Eventually I got a taxi and joined Charlotte, her coworker, Pamela & Kostas for dinner. We had about 10 different dishes, and I even tried the sardines (ick). It was nice to sit outside and socialize and eat, and I hated for the evening to end.

But it did, and Charlotte and I jumped in a taxi back to Piraeus, dropping Kostas off about 1/2 way back. Charlotte and I had a drink up on the rooftop, then both of us collapsed into bed and fell right to sleep. My last night in Greece!

Aimless Wandering....

Day 3 in Piraeus/Athens: no real plan. I didn't get going as early as I'd hoped, and it was noon before I got in to Athens. (I'm really getting on to Greek time now!!!) I spent the next hour or so walking around, doing a little shopping, and just enjoying the atmosphere.

I returned to Monastariki for lunch, because I had a craving for another pita. I ended up at a place called Quick Pita and had a gyro, which was pretty good for basically being fast food. As I finished my beer, the waiter brought another one, confusing the heck out of me until he said it was from the gentleman a couple tables over. Eventually the guy came over and we had a nice chat - but oh, did he have some bad teeth!

I made my escape by saying I needed to go to the Acropolis Museum before dinner, which was true. But first I headed to a leather goods store that I had checked out the previous day. I ended up walking out with a pair of sandals and a purse, both of which I love.

Then I went to the Acropolis Museum. It was quite cool, with artifacts from different sites on and eras of the Acropolis. The video presentation of the Parthenon definitely had a bitter tone when discussing Lord Elgin!

At some point, my phone had run out of credit and so I was completely out of touch with Charlotte. I ended up buying a phone card so I could check in with her, and in the end I didn't make it back to join her in her after-work drinks. I got back to the hotel incredibly hungry, and ended up going around the corner to a little restaurant where I had Greek salad and calamari. Yes, I had calamari! I liked the little tender bits but the larger, more rubbery pieces got left on the plate. I definitely did not enjoy the squid breath afterwards!

I went to bed planning an earlier start on Thursday, aka "Museum Day."

History and Heat

I got a late start on Tuesday, arriving in Athens just before noon. I figured I would head for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the changing of the guard, since it was so close to the top of the hour. It was fascinating to watch - I'm going to have to read up on the origin and meaning of the unusual footwork during the ceremony.

One of the Frommer's walking tours started from Syntagma, so I decided to go with that. One of the first places of interest was a pie shop - and since it was recommended, what could I do but get something to eat?! I got an eggplant/zuchinni/feta pie. It was yummy!

The walk continued down Ermou Street, and since I was there, what could I do but shop??? I actually managed to resist buying any shoes, a mazingly enough, and followed the walk along into Monastiriki Square and the surrounding area, where I picked up a couple of little souvenirs and postcards.

I veered off of the walk route at this point and walked around the bottom of the Acropolis, by which point I was hot, sweaty, and slightly sunburned. This seemed like a good time for a break - so I found a cafe and after a loooong wait, got a frappe. Yum. I sat and enjoyed the cool drink, the shade, and the view for quite a while!

Despite it being very sunny and very hot, I decided I may as well go to the Acropolis since I was there and had my walking sandals on. And it was wow: incredibly hot, seriously windy, stunningly beautiful, and almost mind-blowingly historic. The Parthenon was gorgeous, as was the view of Athens. The Ancient Agora was serene and a welcome break. Part of me had - and still has - some difficulty abosrbing just how old the structures, sculptures and items are; it's amazing to think how long they've been around. The art in the Ancient Agora Museum - painted housewares, jewelry, sculptures - was impressive.

Charlotte and I arranged to meet for dinner in Athens, and after I had wandered the Ancient Agora for some time I headed out to the surrounding neighborhoods. I poked around in a few shops

, including a leather goods store I need to go back to. I realized I was starving so had an appetizer - lamb pita - delicious!!!! Then I strolled around Psyrri for a bit, running in to some beautiful old signs.

After Charlotte arrived, we went to Platanos Taverna for dinner: Greek salad, saganaki, and lamb with eggplant... I am completely loving the food here! The Taverna was on a quiet little side street, so we enjoyed the food, the cool night, and the company for quite some time before calling it a night... and were actually back in Piraeus by midnight. An early evening!

Athens - Day One

My first day in Athens! I hopped on the Metro in Piraeus for the quick ride in and wandered around a bit before meeting Pamela at her hotel.

We decided we were hungry, so headed for Plaka and found a taverna. Two salads later (one Greek, one Cretan) we were off to the National Botanical Gardens.

The gardens were a bit smaller than we'd expected and not nearly as green as we thought. We had a very pleasant walk around, though, and saw the "collection of birds and animals" which consisted of chickens, ducks, geese, a couple mules, a cat in with the aforementioned birds (!), and a couple of parakeet-sized birds in a very large enclosure.

Next, we headed to Brettos, a liqueur maker in Plaka. When we arrived, we were the only customers, and the proprietor was very generous in giving us tastes of the various flavors: ouzo (2 kinds); banana, pomegranate, mango, and blue liqueurs; rakomelo; and mesticha. We each got a glass of liqueur - I had rakomelo - and chatted with the proprietor and a couple guys from San Francisco that came in. By the time we left, I was feeling very mellow!

We then went looking for the Ouzo King, and finally found the shop, but were disappointed to discover samples were not offered. After a snack, we headed back to Piraeus to meet Charlotte and change for the evening.

Then, off to the Hilton Galaxy Bar for drinks and a view of the Acropolis at night. It was fabulously beautiful, but I was glad I had mentally prepared myself for the drinks - some of them were as much as 25 Euro! We savored the drinks and the view then went to dinner in Kolonaki. Next - off to a bar, Belafonte, that was in Conde Nast. Unfortunately, it was closed for filming of something for tv - which was really disappointing, it looked like a cool place!

We hailed a taxi and asked the driver to take us to a fun bar. We had no idea where he was going! but we ended up in Psyrri, which is a very cool area with lots of restaurants and bars. We chose a hookah bar, but didn't get a hookah for the table - although I did get a lesson in smoking a hookah from one of the staff.

After finishing our drinks, we headed home.... another night of getting to bed at 3 am!

Hydra

Friday evening we got on a ferry to Hydra. It was a very pleasant 2 hour ride, which Charlotte and I spent ossiping and catching up.

When we arrived at Hydra, we went straight to the hotel (following directions that made NO sense when I wrote them down, but total sense when we got here!), dropped our luggae, and met 4 other women that Charlotte knows from NY at a ta

verna. We ordered all kinds of food and shared, which was fun and gave us the chance to try a lot of things. I loved everything, but the zucchini balls were my favorite that night.

After dinner we bar hopped - we ended up at a bar that played salsa music (!) and were all dancing. Charlotte and I got back to our room at 3:30 am....

I managed to get up at 10 am on Saturday and picked up iced coffees and a cheese pie for our breakfast, yum! We headed down to the port and got on a water taxi to the beach. It was very cute. We spent the entire afternoon there, going in the water occasionally to cool down. Well - we did take a break to go to the taverna for lunch (stuffed zucchini, stuffed tomatoes, Greek salad and spinach pie - all yummy!).

After heading back we did some shopping, then some more shopping, and then just a teeny bit more. We met up with the others for a quick drink, and Charlotte and I had ouzo, yum. Eventually we decided we were hungry again despite having been stuffed after lunch, and met the others for dinner at a taverna witha beautiful garden patio. We ordered 5 or 6 dishes and shared again, and again everything was delicious. We had the house wine, which was so good that we decided to get a second bottle. The waiter assured us that he was happy to have us stay for the second bottle, so we sat and drank and talked while they cleaned up the tables around us! We finally left at 1 am.

Charlotte and I decided we weren't quite ready for bed, so we ended up at the same bar we'd ended the night at on Friday. This time we sat at a table outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather... heading back to the hotel at 3 am! Thank goodness it was about 20 yards from the bar!

So now we're packing... the plan is to go to another beach until it's time for the ferry this evening. Although I'm looking forward to exploring Athens, I'll be sad to leave Hydra!

Greece, Here I Come!

Spent a very lazy day in Tonbridge yesterday, lounging around the house most of the day. We did go for a coulple of walks - we took a nice long walk to the train station, then through a park and the countryside. The scenery was really beautiful, and it was nice before to get some exercise and stretch the legs.

We went for a second walk later - to the train station, to buy my ticket for today, then to get food for dinner.

The rest of the evening we watched tv - there was this incredibly bizarre and gross show about teenagers' bodies (they showed an infected tongue piercing, ew!). We also watched Hell's Kitchen, which I'd never seen before, and a show called Bring Them Back - this guy rounds up the cast members of old shows/movies and interviews them, then brings them together. The first one we watched was the cast of Fame, which was interesting and funny and really good. The second one was the cast of Star Wars, which sadly I only made it through half of before going to bed. There's one on the A-Team, I have got to find it and watch it!

After staying up late I slept in this morning. Had some breakfast, then took a walk on Tonbridge High Street, then off through the park again. I'll post pictures later, it really was so beautiful.

Finally it was time to leave, and 2.3 hours after I left Tonbridge, I arrived at Heathrow. Everything went smoothly until I went through secuirty - I had my saline out of my ziploc and they threw it out for being 4, not 3, ounces. Apparently 'medical essentials' here requires a doctors note or prescription, unlike in the U.S. where saline/contact solution is a given. Rar.

So - off to find food, I'm starved. Next post will be from Greece!

On My Way

Not in Greece yet, but on my way! I left Chicago at 9 am on Tuesday, arrived in London at 10:30 pm the same day. Nice! The day flight definitely minimizes jet lag. And I managed to stay awake the entire flight - watched THREE movies. Now my Netflix list can shrink by .03%!

Not sure why American has taken to serving the 2nd meal 45 minutes before landing... I thought it was a fluke coming back from Budapest, but it happened again yesterday. I was about to gnaw on my arm, I was so hungry.

So one more night in London, where it is chilly and at the moment, sunny. Then tomorrow evening, off to Athens - so looking forward to 91F and sunny!

The Countdown Begins....!

Ya sou! Just over a week before I head back to Europe - this time, a couple days in London then Piraeus, Greece!

Why Piraeus? Charlotte is working in her company's Piraeus office for the summer, and was generous enough to invite me (and others) to visit her while she's there. A few calls to American for some award seat wrangling, and my visit was a done deal.

Piraeus is a port near Athens; in fact, the cities are connected by the metro, making it easy to explore Athens while Charlotte is working. On the weekend I am there, we're going to Hydra, which is a 2 hour ferry ride away and very scenic.

Two of my work friends are Greek American and have been trying to teach me basic Greek ( they are very patient!). I've also downloaded One Minute Greek Lessons and listened to them on the train the other night; I'll have time on my business trip this weekend to listen to them again. So hopefully I'll have at least the basic pleasantries down before I go!

I'm so excited... and a little anxious about being gone so long - this is the longest vacation I've taken. I am definitely looking forward to it though - stay tuned for updates and eventually, pictures (including the inevitable food photos!)!
